Aims of the programme

If you are a music performer or composer who is looking to follow a professional career path (probably self employed), you can attend our New Deal for Musicians advisory programme.

If you are registered unemployed, the government may pay your fees. There are some conditions but most people who try are eligible.

This open learning and jobsearch service is designed to help unemployed musicians into the industry and into work, focussing on making successful job applications for employment which will help them further their long term career objectives.

Contacts with - industry employers, publishers, promoters, label  executives, A & R departments, radio stations.

Advice on -  your material, self promotion, contracts, gigging, royalties & fees, internet business, self employment, alternative marketing.

We may also assist with - musical advice, cheap CD production, band website, development, deals on equipment, recording advice.

Who is the programme suitable for? 

This option is suitable for candidates with some experience in music performance and is designed to help them develop, or prepare for, a sustainable financially self supporting career in the music industry. Suitable candidates include ...

Vocalists, instrumentalists, performers, songwriters, producers, managers, promoters and DJs

This option does NOT offer musical training or help with the purchase of instruments and equipment.

Hurricane & Armstrong Learning

In partnership with Armstrong Learning, we deliver the NDfM programme nationally. We are the training provider for South East, Greater London and East of England and Armstrong Learning cover all other areas.

What is a MIP?

The NDfM programme is delivered by Music Industry Providers (MIPs). We and Armstrong Learning are MIPs.

Just to confuse matters, the actual individual industry advisors that we employ to meet with and help musicians are commonly referred to as MIPs. Geddit?!

Programme options

13 week One2One mentoring advice service. 30 hours per week student centered activities including a weekly meeting with a MIP advisor.

How do I apply?

Registered unemployed

Help for students

Whilst training you will receive the cash equivalent of your unemployment and housing benefit. You will also normally be entitled to the reimbursement of any costs incurred traveling to and from your place of study (and work placement) or meetings with your New Deal for Musicians advisor.

Help for JobCentre advisors

Private fee paying commercial students

Due to the demand for this provision, IMT have now made this option available on a commercial basis.

A 13 week intensive mentoring programme will cost £595 + vat, and will include weekly consultations (7 of which are one hour, face-to-face meetings at Hurricane Studios ).
