City & Guilds assessment procedures

This page contains information about how our City & Guilds students are assessed.

Access to assessment documents

At the beginning of your course, you will be given access to the documents or system which your tutor will use to record your assessment progress. You will be able to view your assessment progress at any time. You cannot ask to view another students document.

Assessment procedures

Assessment towards the City & Guilds qualification takes the following form ...

  1. Observed continual assessment of practical skills
  2. Oral questions which test a students theory knowledge
  3. Portfolio of supporting evidence

There is no required written test or examination. When a student has demonstrated competence in a unit on 2 separate occasions they will be passed. All units must be passed to achieve the qualification.

Why do I need a portfolio?

To pass the qualification, City & Guilds requires that you not only reach the required standards of knowledge and skills but can evidence your learning with an accompanying portfolio of supporting evidence. This portfolio should reflect the effort and work you have put into the course during your months of study and placement.

What should my portfolio contain?

Your portfolio needs to contain substantial evidence of your learning but need not evidence everything you have learnt.

What form should this evidence take?

Quality of presentation

You should take care in the presentation of your evidence. Unless your handwriting is neat you should word process all written elements. The college has computers loaded with software and templates which you can use.

You can build your portfolio during your activities at home, in your placement or during class time at IMT.
